College Art Association Executive Director Hunter O’Hanian to Step Down

NEW YORK—College Art Association board president Jim Hopfensperger and executive director Hunter O’Hanian have announced that O’Hanian will leave the organization at the end of this three-year contract in June. O’Hanian came to the art and education advocacy organization in July 2016 from the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art, where he was director. College Art Association will conduct a search for a new executive director this spring and name an interim executive director in the coming weeks.

“Hunter has led CAA with great intelligence, empathy, energy, and passion, and the association has enjoyed many successes these past three years,” Hopfensperger said. “In particular, the board of directors is grateful for his commitment to diversity and inclusion, and his efforts to better position CAA for successes as both a learned society and a professional association.”

“For me, it’s been an exciting and fulfilling experience. I have enjoyed meeting and working with the members, staff, and board, while strengthening out programs. Making change is never easy, especially for an association with a 107-year history,” O’Hanian said. “But I could not be prouder of the staff at CAA, the board of directors, the committees and editorial boards, and the members of this organization, for their work ethic and feedback. I believe we have made a stronger association.”

Under O’Hanian’s leadership, CAA initiated a new membership structures, staffing, and financial reporting and implemented a new brand identity. He developed plans for year-round engagement nationwide and expanded offerings at the association’s annual conference, the most recent of which Rahel Aima profiled for Art & Education’s School Watch. O’Hanian also strengthened ties with CAA affiliated societies, the association’s publisher Routledge, Taylor & Francis.
