Karen Hoffman Appointed Provost at ArtCenter College of Design

PASADENA, CALIFORNIA—Karen Hoffman has been named provost of the ArtCetner College of Design, the first woman to hold that position in the institution’s eighty-eight-year history. Hoffman, an ArtCenter almuna, has served as interim provost since 2017

“I am humbled by this opportunity to serve ArtCenter, a place I love dearly, and ensure that the future artists and designers are provided the tools they need to help shape the world around us,” Hoffman said. “My time as interim provost has been one of deep reflection and given me the confidence to address educational and organizational issues I’m most passionate about. I understand the challenges of navigating the institution in its current structure and the opportunities to shape what the office could be in the future.”

Since 2009, Hoffman has chaired the school’s product design department, where she increased the diversity of the design faculty and launched curricula in color and material design, design research and strategy, and design entrepreneurship. The design department emphasized community engagement and responsibility and co-curricular education in teaching assistantships, internships, and travel and mentorship under her direction. Hoffman also established ArtCenter’s Color, Materials and Trends Exploration Laboratory and Sewing Lab, expanding the school’s offerings in wearables and surface design.

“Karen’s performance as interim provost has been remarkably strong,” ArtCenter College of Design president Lorne M. Buchman said. “She has show incredible skillfulness working through a number of exceedingly difficult problems and I look forward to working with her on a more permanent basis.”
