School of Visual Arts in New York Names New Provost and Department Chairs

NEW YORK—The School of Visual Arts in New York has announced new appointments for the 2018–19 academic year. The college has named Christopher J. Cyphers provost. This will be his second time in the role, having served as the school’s first provost from 2002 through 2008. Previously, Cyphers served as the SVA’s director of institutional research and assessment and has spent four years as president of the New York School of Interior Design.

In addition, Carol Rusche Bentel, a partner at the Long Island–based firm Bentel & Bentel Architects/Planners, was tapped as the new chair of the Bachelor of Fine Arts’s Interior Design Department; illustrator Jimmy Calhoun has been named the chair of the BFA program’s Computer Art, Computer Animation, and Visual Effects Department; photographer and video artist Joseph Maida is the new chair of the Photography and Video Department; and educator Catherine Rosamond, who comes to the SVA after a decade of working at Queens College in New York, was appointed as chair of the MAT Art Education Department.
