ArtCenter College of Design and Main Museum Announce Exploratory Partnership

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA—The ArtCenter College of Design and the Main Museum of Los Angeles Art have announced the creation of a long-term operational and programmatic partnership that would allow both institutions to provide greater outreach and access to art and design education to ArtCenter students and faculty and the Los Angeles community. The exploratory phase of the partnership begins June 1 and will continue through 2018, and follows a months-long search by the Main’s leadership for an institutional partner.

“Though we don’t yet have all the details of the collaboration finalized, we are fortunate to have the time and space to imagine the possibilities as a group,” Main Museum director Allison Agsten said. “Movements aren’t made by individuals, they are made by the collective, and to that end, the more of us that can work together, the better. The Main’s work is very much rooted in process—such as building the museum over time—so it seems only right to create a partnership with ArtCenter in a way that is true to our mode of organizing.”

The collaboration would afford the Pasadena-based art college a foothold in Downtown Los Angeles and financial and operational stability for the Main. The museum will remain an independent organization offering exhibitions, programs, and artist residencies, with support from the ArtCenter staff. The school will lease the Main Museum’s space for $1 per year while maintaining its facilities in the Los Angeles suburbs.

“The prospect of working with a museum in Downtown Los Angeles offers the chance to create rich, intercultural, and transdisciplinary dialogue with a wider community of Angelenos as well as the many visitors to the central L.A. destination,” ArtCenter provost Karen Hofmann said. “We know this collaboration will produce exceptional contemporary art and design programming for Los Angeles. Working with the Main will also offer new opportunities for our students and faculty to engage with an arts institution and practicing artists in the heart of the city.”

The Main Museum was established in the Downtown Los Angeles Arts District as a non-collecting institution and residency program in 2016 by real estate developers Tom Gilmore and Jerri Perrone. While the space has been renovated, it has operated as Beta-Main and presented exhibitions by Suzanne Lacy and Andrea Bowers, among other programs. Construction on the Main Museum is expected to be complete in 2020.
