Suad Garayeva-Maleki Promoted to Artistic Director of YARAT

BAKU, AZERBAIJAN—Suad Garayeva-Maleki, chief curator of YARAT Contemporary Art Space since 2014, has been named artistic director of the Baku non-profit art organization, Annie Armstrong reports for Artnews. Garayeva-Maleki assumes the artistic directorship from Björn Geldhof, who will return to the PinchukArtCentre in Kiev as artistic director. Garayeva-Maleki previously held positions at Sotheby’s London and the Instituto Europeo di Design; she is currently a guest lecturer at the Azerbaijan State Academy of Fine Arts.

As chief curator, Garayeva-Maleki has presented exhibitions by Goshka Macuga, Stephen G. Rhodes, Neïl Beloufa, Hannah Black, Oscar Murillo, Shirin Neshat, Sitara Ibrahimova, Ilkin Huseynov, and Zamir Suleymanov. As artistic director, the art center’s programming will increase its focus on Azerbaijani contemporary artists.

YARAT, which means “create” in Azerbaijani, was found in 2011 by Aida Mahmudova, is “dedicated to nurturing an understanding of contemporary art in Azerbaijan and to creating a platform for Azerbaijani art, both nationally and internationally.” The art center’s education program supports workshops, lectures, screening and artist residencies.
