Lia Gangitano To Receive CCS Bard’s Audrey Irmas Award for Curatorial Excellence

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, NEW YORK—The Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College has named Lia Gangitano recipient of the 2018 Audrey Irmas Award for Curatorial Excellence. The award comes with a $25,000 prize and will be presented at the CCS Bard Gala Celebration in April 2018.

Gangitano founded the non-profit art space PARTICIPANT INC in 2001 on New York City’s Lower East Side, where she has since presented exhibitions by Kathe Burkhart, Michel Auder, Charles Atlas, Ellen Cantor, Breyer P-Orridge, and Greer Lankton, among many others. Prior to her founding of PARTICIPANT INC, Gangitano was associate curator at New York’s Thread Waxing Space. In 2015, she was awarded the Skowhegan School of Sculpture and Painting’s Governor’s Award for Outstanding Service to Artists and the inaugural White Columns/Shoot the Lobster Award. Gangitano is currently on the graduate committee of CCS Bard.

“Lia Gangitano is a curatorial pioneer presenting artists and artwork that have often been marginalized. Looking back over more than three decades of exhibitions and curatorial projects, we are delighted to celebrate the significant contribution Lia has made to the cultural life of New York City,” said Tom Eccles, executive director of CCS Bard. “In the age of ‘global-curating,’ the selection panel for this year’s award recognized her refreshingly local approach, one that has created and supported a vibrant and fundamentally diverse program built upon a community of ideas and artists.”

Since 1998, CCS Bard has given the Award for Curatorial Excellence to a curator whose contributions to the field have had a lasting impact on exhibition-making. Recent recipients include Sir Nicholas Serota, formerly of the Tate; Thelma Golden, of the Studio Museum Harlem; Christine Tohme, of Ashkal Alwan; and the artist and gallery director Martha Wilson.
