The Academy of Fine Arts in Prague is a state university with a broad autonomy constituted on the principles of transparency, promotion of democratic standards, diversity, inclusion, and equity, and is committed to following sustainable practices.

Even in the twenty-first century the Academy continues to build on its prestige and tradition dating back to more than 220 years. The oldest art school in the Czech Republic, it has produced most key artists of the past centuries. Over the years, the school expanded from traditional fields of art such as sculpture, painting, and printmaking by adding a school of architecture and art restoration and the fields of new media, intermedia, and drawing.

Instruction at AVU is thoroughly individual and takes place in small-scale collectives of students led by artists or groups of artists, focused primarily on each student’s specific talents. It offers education on a graduate and doctoral level and cooperates with numerous art academies, organizations, galleries and museums in Central Europe as well as globally.

The school is organized in a horizontally accessible manner and besides fostering individual talent, it broadens capacities of collective collaboration and puts emphasis on critical education in contemporary theory.
