Macarena Gómez-Barris: Artistic Undercurrents in the War Against the Earth

Recasting Water Worlds

Revising what could be mobilizing acts of poetics from the arts of earth and water defense, Macarena Gómez-Barris asks in her book The Extractive Zone what environmental stories and political disputes would be reported in emancipatory epistemologies. She aims to give visibility to what she calls “submerged perspectives,” indigenous and queer voices that dismantle the phenomenology of otherness captured by the colonial gaze. In this lecture, she introduces the work of several artists in Latin America who mobilize against corporate and state oppression responsible for water management plans, land grabbing, and community dispossession. In wanting to undo the extractive state she asks: “What would be the sovereignty of the otherwise?”
