Renate Loll: Quantum Origins of Space and Time

From The Physics of Nothing

In this video, we return to quantum gravity, the marriage between general relativity and quantum field theory. Renate Loll is a Dutch physicist at the Institute for Mathematics, Astrophysics, and Particle Physics at Radboud University in Nijmegen, Netherlands. She is known for her contributions to a theory known as loop quantum gravity (which Rovelli also helped pioneer), and, more recently, for developing a novel approach to quantum gravity known as Causal Dynamical Triangulations. This lecture, delivered at the Perimeter Institute in Waterloo, Ontario, in May 2010, gives a sense of the special problems facing a quantum theory of gravity. Unfortunately, it is a bit less accessible than the others, but some readers may find the extra detail rewarding.
