Professorship in metal and jewellery art

Oslo National Academy of the Arts (KHiO), is Norway’s largest college of higher education for artists and designers. KHiO has six faculties: Adademy of Dance, Department of Design, Academy of Fine Art, Department of Art & Craft, Academy of Opera and Academy of Theatre. KHiO offers numerous courses of studies at bachelor’s and master’s degree level within these main disciplines. The Art and Craft Department offers higher art education in the fields of ceramics, textile, print and drawing, metal and jewelry, art and public space. The department has an experimental approach to workshop-based art practice.

We are a meeting place for interdisciplinary collaboration and the development of material-based art and strategies for art and public space. Our study programmes emphasise the exploration of craft-based knowledge and the relationships between art, society and the individual.

The Art and Craft Department offers a bachelor program in medium and material-based art and two master programs. Research fellows are also a part of the school’s PhD program. The department has approximately 35 faculty members and 155 students.

About the position
The Department of Art and Craft is now accepting applications for the position of Professor with head responsibility for the area of metal and jewellery art. The position is full-time with a fixed term of six years and the possibility of one further period following a public announcement and successful new application. Expected date of appointment: January 1, 2023.

Study area metal and jewellery art
The teaching is based on artistic practice with a focus on craft and materials, in parallel with art theory and methodology. Experimentation and investigation – both practical and conceptual – are strongly emphasized. The study area aims to stimulate awareness of metal and jewellery art’s potential to convey meaning and to strengthen students’ capacity for critical reflection in relation to their own artistic practice.

The study’s main areas of specialization are jewellery art, object/sculpture, installation, art in public space and concept-based approaches. The relationship between idea and material is central, and forms of instruction include technical courses, workshops, lectures, and tutorials. The department’s technical facilities are excellently equipped and unique among art academies internationally.

Main tasks
The successful applicant will have artistic and pedagogic responsibility for the development and operation of the study area metal and jewellrey art. Leadership of the study area includes responsibility for developing the department’s bachelor and master study programmes with a focus on quality of education, professional relevance, and contextual understanding, including metal and jewellrey art’s history and contemporary practices. It is expected that the successful applicant contributes to the public discussion of art and help promote the department’s activity nationally and internationally. Leadership of the study area, which constitutes 20% of the position, also entails coordination of the study area’s teaching and research activity.

Essential duties include teaching, tutoring, artistic development/research and administrative tasks. It is expected that teaching is closely connected to the candidate’s own artistic research/practice.

The head manager for the position is the dean, who is responsible for both the professional and administrative operation of the department.

Salary according to state employee scale, gross wages as professor SKO 1013, NOK 701 300 to 839 900 (wage scale 69–80) depending on qualifications. Two percent of the salary will be withheld and deposited in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
