Professorship: Sound in Fine Arts

The Braunschweig University of Art is seeking candidates for the Institute of Fine Arts W3 Professorship Sound in Fine Arts.

The successful candidate will be appointed on a permanent civil servant basis or permanent employment basis. We are seeking a high-ranking individual with an artistic oeuvre which makes a considerable contribution to contemporary art. The successful candidate should specialise in sound as an artistic medium of the fine arts and embody an exceptional position in current discourse. The area of work incorporates teaching in the field of sound in the fine arts in particular for the fine arts students including also the master student courses and teaching courses.

Duties include
–Experimental and conceptual handling of sound with a reflection on the significant potential of audible elements and aspects with a broad orientation to the audible and visible elements of these processes and the provision of this in artistic practice.
–Teaching with a focus on the perception, testing out and discussion of the various aspects, possibilities and strategies of audio-visual associations (total 18 teaching units).
–Promotion of students to create their own, independent artistic work and to develop the ability to reflect on this and position this in the context of a current artistic debate.
–Teaching of theory and practice of artistic questions and processes.
–Specialist co-supervision of the sound art lab.
–Pledge to become actively involved in the university’s organs and committees and a commitment to the university’s further development.

As this involves an artistic professorship, research is orientated to the further development of the individual’s own artistic field of work.

The successful candidate will be expected to help raise the profile of the subject through their active participation in contemporary artistic discourse, the further development of their own artistic oeuvre at the university as well as with their own exhibitions and exhibition participation, publications and lectures etc. Lecturers at the Braunschweig University of Art benefit from a wide range of national and international partnerships. The successful candidate will be expected to use these many varied cooperation possibilities.
English language skills preferred.

Requirements
–University degree
–Exceptional ability for artistic work proven with an artistic oeuvre with a significant contribution to contemporary sound art
–Additional artistic achievements proven by an openness to the various tendencies and developments in the field of contemporary art in general and sound in the fine arts in particular through a minimum 5 years’ independent artistic practice
–Evidence of teaching/educational suitability through practical experience
–Ability to teach with a close proximity to artistic practice with a broad knowledge on the
diversity of acoustic production forms, their processing and applications
–German language skills B2 level by the time of starting the position

All candidates should possess the necessary social, management, gender equality and diversity promotion expertise and be prepared to be involved, in particular, in academic self-government and committee work. A high degree of communication willingness is expected as well as the ability to act interactively across various universities. Further requirements can be found in § 25 of the Lower Saxon Higher Education Act of 15.06.2017.
