Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) is one of the most progressive art schools in Europe, with 2,800 enrolled students. Its diverse range of degree and research programs include fine arts, design, film, music, dance, theater, art education, media, and transdisciplinary studies. On November 26, 2020, the Department of Fine Arts (DFA) hosts an online information day, that provides insights into the Bachelor as well as the Master program in Fine Arts at ZHdK.

The Department of Fine Arts is one of the most important international training and research institutions for artists, art critics, curators, and researchers in the field of fine arts in Europe. Under the direction of the artist Swetlana Heger and anchored in the cultural and media city of Zurich, teaching at the DFA is internationally positioned and focused on the experimental opening, promotion, and deepening of diverse, individual, and collaborative approaches to artistic, (trans)media practice and its various strategies and procedures.

The Bachelor's program in Fine Arts (BFA) educates artists by opening up the entire medial breadth of contemporary artistic creation. By focusing on individual and/or collaborative projects in partnership with other (inter-)national artists, the students are equipped to work in the art world. The program is a forum for debate and critical reflection on art, culture, and society and promotes the specific artistic interests of each individual student through a clearly tailored course of study.

Head of the BFA program: Dr. Raphael Gygax
BFA faculty members and guest lecturers include, among others: Cory Arcangel, Marc Bauer, Pauline Boudry, Monster Chetwynd, Nora Turato, Maria Eichhorn, Anke Kempkes, Bea Schlingelhoff, Edward Thomasson and Wu Tsang.
Tuition fees: Swiss and EU: 720 CHF per semester / outside Europe: 1,220 CHF per semester
Duration: 6 semesters of full-time study

The Master of Fine Arts program (MFA) focuses on the deepening, professionalization, and contextualization of the students’ artistic practice, combining knowledge and theories across disciplines and methodologies. Faculty and students form a dedicated community of established and emerging practitioners. The main objectives of the MFA are to provide a supportive environment for students to thrive as artists, and to help them develop a set of skills – practical and intellectual – with which to consolidate their careers.

Head of the MFA program: Swetlana Heger a.i.
