The Department of Technology, Culture, and Society (TCS) at the NYU Tandon School of Engineering invites applications for a full time, non-tenured, renewable contract faculty position and a full time, 1-year, non-renewable visiting faculty position in Integrated Digital Media, with a start date of September 1, 2020.

We seek candidates for a continuing-contract Industry Assistant Professor position with a disciplinary focus in Visual Design, with an active practice in User Interface and User Experience design. Applicants may work in the above areas in the context in visual design fields (graphic design, print and publishing, typography, web, data visualization), critical design research, service design, game design, information design, persuasive design, or other relevant areas. The successful candidate should have an active, industry facing design practice in addition to being an excellent teacher with a strong commitment to student mentorship and experience in all levels of teaching, with a strong focus on undergraduate education.

We seek candidates for a non-renewable Visiting Professor position in all areas of digital media practice—including art, design, and games—with a preference for research and teaching interests in one or more of the following areas of focus: video / digital photography / experimental filmmaking, web design, game design, or real-time live performance. The successful candidate should be an excellent teacher with a strong commitment to student mentorship and experience in all levels of teaching, from introductory undergraduates to graduate students.

Candidate for either position must have a Masters degree or higher and an outstanding record of artistic practice, technical innovation, and/or scholarship in their area of focus. Candidates with a hybrid academic background (e.g., degrees in engineering and arts, humanities, or design), and whose work is concerned with themes of advocacy / activism, social / civic engagement, cultural / environmental sustainability, design justice, and/or media equity are especially encouraged to apply.

The Integrated Digital Media (IDM) Program at NYU is a place that fosters creative practice, design research and multidisciplinary experimentation with emerging media technologies. As a research-active program within NYU Tandon School of Engineering, IDM faculty collaborate in research that integrates digital media and society. Our projects run a wide gamut- from using motion capture technology to reimagine theatrical performance, developing novel uses of virtual/augmented reality for health and wellness, integration of STEAM learning into special needs education, development of citizen science tools to empower NYC residents to monitor and report on noise pollution in their communities, helping NASA JPL develop next-generation user interfaces for space exploration, and assisting with the search and visualization of the historical record of New York City.

Our faculty include leading artists, designers, developers, and performers who passionately engage in professional work and research at the intersection of engineering and creative practice.
