Each year, the Department of Master Lens-Based Media at The Piet Zwart Institute co-operates with The International Film Festival Rotterdam in organising a series of intensive mini-masterclasses or a symposium around one of the IFFR theme programs.
This year, as part of the new professional development program within the Lens-Based Media Program, we are excited to collaborate with the IFFR Wait and See programme in the creation of a series of First Symptoms sessions that will run throughout the festival.
In these sessions, key festival guests will be invited to talk about an early work of theirs in the intimate setting of The Waiting Room Studio. Each event will only allow only some 24 people in per session: creating a chance for a face to face meeting with an experienced artist or filmmaker, and to explore the genesis of their early works. Every session has special reserved places for PZI students.
After the festival, at the PZI Lens-Based program, there will be a further professional development session with the curator of the Wait and See program (Edwin Carels). Carels will discuss with students insights and questions deriving from the the First Symptoms sessions.
The IFFR Wait and See is a programme about looking ahead, about imagining a future situation: a programme about cultivated curiosity and quiet impatience.
Imagine a space, a room that one can enter at any time. Take a seat, and wait. It feels very much like a traditional waiting room, with chairs lined up against the wall, magazines on a low table, and a video monitor hanging opposite the chairs. And perhaps a plant or two.
The visitor to this waiting room can only sit and wait (or read) until—at irregular intervals—a video work comes up on the screen. The contents of the programme are short films: all new works that leave the viewer puzzled and stimulate a discussion.
A few times a day, the door leading to the consulting room opens, and a group of people is invited to attend a special session around one filmmaker, a more interactive session or a surprise event.
The Piet Zwart Institute houses the international master programmes of the Willem de Kooning Academy at the Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences. Named after the pioneering Dutch designer Piet Zwart, who worked experimentally across different media and contexts, our institute offers six master programmes: Lens-Based Media, Experimental Publishing, Fine Art, Interior Architecture: Research + Design, Education in Arts and Master Design.
Through a uniquely tailored curriculum combining collective learning, intensive individual tutorial support, practice-based research and theoretical inquiry, our programmes educate young professionals who have a critically reflective and imaginative approach to their work.
The Piet Zwart Institute will be open for new applications. Due to the quantity of applications the Piet Zwart Institute Master programs receive, regulations regarding immigration, and international opportunities to apply for study funding, we strongly encourage you to apply early.
March 6, 2020: Priority deadline for completed applications of Dutch, EU applicants.

Open house: Saturday, February 1, 2020, 10am–3pm.
The Master Fine Art organizes Open Studios on February 8, 11am–7pm.
