At IDSVA’s January 12, 2019 Commencement in New York City, board member Edgar Coons announced his one million dollar gift to IDSVA. The gift will fund the Edgar E. Coons, Jr., Professorship of New Philosophy. 

On behalf of the board of trustees, Coons named IDSVA founder and president George Smith as IDSVA’s first Edgar E. Coons, Jr., Professor of New Philosophy. Smith is author of the recently published The Artist-Philosopher and New Philosophy.

 

Founded in 2006 and fully accredited in 2015, the Institute for Doctoral Studies in the Visual Arts offers a world class low-residency PhD in art theory and philosophy.

Residency sites include Rome, Spannochia Castle in Tuscany, Siena, Venice, Berlin, Paris, New York City, and Athens. Starting in spring 2019 new residency sites include Mexico City, Madrid, Barcelona, Casablanca, and Marrakech.
