The Slade School of Fine Art will be welcoming MPhil/PhD applications for 2019 entry.

The Slade is a vibrant, world leading, international art school at the forefront of art education and with an established history of excellence in research. At the centre of UCL—ranked in the top ten of research universities in the world—our Doctoral programme offers a specialist doctorate in Fine Art. In addition to the Slade research themes doctoral students are able to carry out interdisciplinary research across departments and faculties of UCL, from Anthropology to Zoology.

Current Slade doctoral research projects
Slade staff research specialisms include diverse media—painting, sculpture, film, video, electronic media, photography, print, publishing, performance, sound and the written word.

Current key Slade research areas include Histories, Environments, Materiality, Performance, Publics, and Earth Sciences.

We are seeking applications from those who aspire to contribute to the Slade’s and UCL’s research culture and extend the boundaries of their research through questioning, interrogating, and exploring the limits of their imagination. Our Doctoral programme is designed to enable students to develop their research through the making of art, practices of writing and scholarly investigation.

The programme includes individual supervision, a bi-weekly forum of research presentations, and an annual doctoral research week at the Slade Research Centre. We support the development of conference presentations, and encourage the development of student led reading groups and research initiatives. The UCL Doctoral School provides a wide range of skills training programmes that fulfil the demand of current doctoral practice. The Slade provides opportunities for BA/BFA level teaching experience and teacher training through the UCL Arena Centre for Research-based Education.

Our Slade workshops, which include print, bookbinding, electronic media, sculpture, photography, film, video and sound, are augmented by other research facilities within UCL, libraries and museums, including UCL Art Museum. Research Centres, such as the Institute of Making and the Institute of Advanced Studies (IAS), and research groups across UCL provide a rich research culture that extends the boundaries of Fine Art research, offering the opportunity for extensive collaborative research.

MPhil/PhD students have access to bookable space at the Slade Research Centre, to test their research.

We offer the following three MPhil/PhD options:

Practice-led: a thesis of studio practice plus a written report of 15,000–40,000 words (10,000–20,000 words, MPhil).
Practice-related: a written thesis of 60,000–80,000 words with studio practice (35,000–45,000 words, MPhil).
Written thesis only: a written thesis of 80,000–100,000 words (50,000–60,000 words, MPhil).

MPhil/PhD students at the Slade are supervised by a team headed by a primary supervisor within the Slade; secondary supervisors may be drawn from other departments within UCL.

The Slade is currently part of the AHRC funded London Arts and Humanities Partnership (LAHP) which brings together a number of leading UK research organisations including King’s College, London (KCL) and the School of Advanced Study (SAS), and University College London (UCL). The LAHP AHRC Doctoral Training Partnership aims has funded and trained several Slade PhD students. As well as funding for studentships and shared Doctoral training, this will open up additional opportunities for interdisciplinary supervision for Slade students across these leading research institutions.
