The Royal College of Art is the UK’s only entirely postgraduate art and design university. In 2018/19 the College will have some 2,300 students registered for MA, MRes, MPhil and PhD degrees and over 400 permanent academic, technical and administrative staff, with more than 800 visiting lecturers and professors. The College’s international reputation as the world’s leading art and design university has been recognised for four successive years by the highly-regarded QS World Ranking survey in 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018.

The School of Arts & Humanities supports focused research and study within an environment that is ambitious in generating new practices and insights. The School thrives on interaction across the broad areas of fine and applied arts and the humanities, to enhance opportunities for collaboration and interdisciplinary activity and to enrich the experience of our students and researchers.

The MA Painting programme, located within the School of Arts & Humanities, is committed to broadening the understanding of the discipline in all its forms. Painting—as a practice, as a discipline, and as a mode of research—and the ideas surrounding what painting is, have been and are being continually reflected upon, and actively explored. The curriculum is designed to develop a student’s individual professional practice, research and orientation in relation to their studio work and to issues in the wider world, across cultures and encompassing global challenges.  Our students are encouraged to reflect upon and to determine what kind of artists they want to be, with the aim of enabling a successful, sustainable and meaningful practice as professional practitioners.

We are seeking a Head of Programme for MA Painting, with an established international reputation in the field and with considerable networks to bring to the College for the benefit of our students. They will lead the discipline in teaching, research and knowledge exchange, and will work closely with the Development and Alumni Relations Office to garner support for Painting and wider College developments.

You will be intellectually curious and committed to developing new directions and possibilities for the discipline of painting in multiple contexts including intercultural dialogue, and material and post-digital practice. You will be accomplished in delivering outstanding teaching and student experience, internationally excellent research, and networks on an international scale. Ideally, you will have experience in securing competitive research grants and be able to play a leading role in contributing to the design of cross-School and/or cross-College academic provision as the College develops its academic framework to facilitate new academic initiatives and flexible modes of learning.
