The Fitzwilliam Museum, the lead member of the University of Cambridge Museums (UCM), invites applications for the post of Director and Marlay Curator.

Founded in 1816 by the bequest of Richard, Viscount Fitzwilliam, an 18th century collector, the Museum today houses over half a million works of art and antiquities spanning centuries and civilisations.  Welcoming some 500,000 visitors a year and with an international reputation for excellence in research, exhibitions and education programmes, the Museum’s Masterplan for the next 10 to 15 years envisages a major and ambitious capital development programme to transform the Museum and its offer to visitors and scholars alike.

The Director provides strategic leadership to the Museum, including leading academic direction and articulating a compelling vision for the Museum’s development in the context of its role as an Arts Council National Portfolio Organisation and as an integrated part of the University. They are charged with the care of the collections and are responsible for the operational and financial management of the Museum and for its strategic development.

The successful candidate will have significant experience of senior leadership, likely to be in the museum or heritage sector but the Board will be open to candidates with different experience as long as they can meet the requirements of the role. They will have the vision to lead one of the world’s best university museums and to inspire its staff, with the proven skills to manage change and to build and maintain stakeholder relationships. They will be comfortable with the task of generating significant  income from external sources and will have the skills and professional standing to provide leadership and advocacy for the Fitzwilliam Museum and for the University of Cambridge Museums partnership.
