In September 2018, the Royal Institute of Art, will launch a new advanced level practice-based course with a shifting thematic for each academic year.

The first Guest professor/Researcher will be the prominent sound artist and electroacoustic composer, Tarek Atoui, who will lead the course, Composing / Public / Space. All the eight participants will work with individual artistic research projects in parallel with a collective dialogue around the three notions of composing, public and space. The course will develop as a studio, a performance space, a laboratory and a place for improvisation and exchange among its participants. The course will also investigate internationally based case-studies in the field of sonic practices led by Tarek Atoui.

Tarek Atoui speaks of his intentions for running Composing / Public / Space:
“Through opening this course to multiple competences and disciplines, I continue my exploration of what convening and collaboration are. In my ongoing project WITHIN, I first started thinking about the compositional act as one that could be deployed over long durations and involve different kinds of competences and know-hows…, Composing / Public / Space will allow me to work with collaborators from diverse fields over an extended period. It will be one in which I come up with new modes and protocols of inviting and convening musicians, instrument makers, and different audiences on my compositions. And I also expect it to challenge my ways of dealing with space when it comes to performing, exhibiting and addressing others.”

This low residency course is organised around approx. Six intensive blocks of 3–5 days spent in Stockholm and international study trips. A research budget is available for each participant. The course is open to professional practitioners within visual art, music, performing arts, design, architecture, curating, and related subjects within the humanities.

Tarek Atoui (born 1980 in Lebanon) lives in Paris, France. His experimental and performance-led compositions have taken place recently at the NTU, Centre for Contemporary Art Singapore (2018); Kunstenfestivaldesarts 2017, Brussel, Belgium; Tate Modern, London, United Kingdom (2016); Fondation Louis Vuitton, Bois de Boulogne, France (2015); the 8th Berlin Biennial (2014); Bonniers Konsthall, Stockholm, Sweden (2013).
