The VCUarts Painting + Printmaking Masters in Fine Arts program provides excellent opportunities for artists to develop their work. Students in the MFA program are supported by exemplary faculty, generous financial aid, intensive studio time, immersive theory and history courses, exhibition opportunities, one-on-one dialogue with practicing artists, and professional opportunities in the field.

A hallmark of the program is student access to a wealth of working artists. Each semester a visiting artist teaches the Graduate Seminar course and conducts bi-weekly individual critiques. In addition, six visiting artists, curators, and critics each year give lectures and conduct studio visits or specially designed workshops. These experiences are supplemented by public lectures organized by other art departments at VCUarts.

Recent visiting artists, curators, and critics include: Alejandro Cesarco, Thom Donovan, Galit Eilat, Nicole Eisenman, Rochelle Feinstein, Joanne Greenbaum, Byron Kim, Daniel Joseph Martinez, Ulrike Müller, R.H. Quaytman, Kanishka Raja, Lisi Raskin, and Fred Wilson

As a crucial part of the MFA curriculum, students take a professional practice course that includes a site seminar experience. In 2017 this included a week-long trip to Germany including visits to Documenta 14, Sculpture Project Münster, and Berlin Art Week. Past experiences have included visits to Mexico City and Los Angeles. Travel opportunities have included programs in Peru and China. In addition, all MFA students have the opportunity to participate in a biannual showcase exhibition of Painting and Printmaking alumni in New York City.

The VCUarts Painting + Printmaking MFA program supports 15 graduate students at a time. Each student has a private studio and access to world-class digital and analogue printmaking facilities, informed by both traditional and contemporary applications of print media. For more information about the program, visit the department website, or contact Hilary Wilder, Painting + Printmaking Graduate Program Director, at hwilder [at] vcu.edu.
