PUBLIC PROGRAMS, OCTOBER – DECEMBER
Education at SFAI is a process of dialogue and reflection; it is attuned to the challenges and responsibilities of the individual in a changing global world. SFAI’s free public programs offer many opportunities for students and the community-at-large to engage with artists and thinkers from around the world.
Current programs include “Spheres of Interest: Experiments in Thinking and Action” organized by Renée Green, Dean of Graduate Programs at SFAI; the “Visiting Artists and Scholars Lecture Series” organized by Glen Helfand; and “The New New Masses,” a series of informal salons for politically engaged debate about art today, organized by SFAI’s 2006 Diebenkorn Fellow, Shaun O’Dell, with Josh On.
Sarkis: Alive and After, the first major US exhibition to examine the new work of this prominent figure of the global art scene, is curated by Hou Hanru, SFAI’s new Director of Exhibitions and Public Programs, and continues through December 9 in the Walter and McBean Galleries. In conjunction with the exhibition, a complementary series of rare avant-garde films, selected by the artist as influential to his work, will be screened at SFAI in October and November.
International artist Alfredo Jaar is the Fall 2006 Fellow of SFAI’s Center for Public Practice; and Hilton Als, writer and critic for The New Yorker, will be the Spring 2007 Fellow of SFAI’s Center for Word, Text, and Image.
