Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts Announces Professorship

SCHOOLS OF VISUAL ARTS

ANNOUNCEMENT

PROFESSORSHIP

At the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts’ Schools of Visual Arts, a position as professor of painting is open for appointment as of October 1, 2008.

The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts’ Schools of Visual Arts is a higher education institution who, through a two-year Basic Studies programme and a four-year study course at the professor’s schools, offers a six-year integrated first and second cycle study programme. The candidate or MFA study programme is taught by eight departments or “schools”, each headed by a professor. The Schools of Visual Arts’ new professor of painting is expected to build an innovative platform for research and teaching, which, by tracing lines in the art of painting throughout its history and up to the present, can contribute to the development of a current discourse on painting.

The appointee must be a visual artist with a significant artistic production within painting. It is a condition of appointment that the applicant occupies him/herself with painting and painting-related problematics, is on a recognized high level within contemporary art and has a marked

exhibition profile.

Applicants are presumed to be able to: 1) create an over-all study situation for the painting school, including planning a study programme which draws on new knowledge and relevant theory in the development of a contemporary painterly practice; 2) in an original way, lay down a framework of a dynamic art education taking its point of departure in the students’ artistic work, including guiding the students and being responsible for their final examinations; 3) perform the artistic production and research attached to the position; and 4) commit themselves to continuous professional development of the institution in close cooperation with the rector and the rest of the academic staff.

Documentation of theoretical knowledge of the subject field and practical experience with art education on a high level is a prerequisite of appointment.

The application must contain a satisfactory account of:

1. The ideas behind the applicant’s own artistic practice and the principal lines of the applicant’s artistic production, among other things, seen in the light of the contemporary art scene.

2. The applicant’s ideas and visions of the education and its planning, including how the applicant’s artistic practice and the education can have a stimulating effect on each other.

3. The applicant’s pedagogical qualifications.

A CV and a list of enclosed documentation, if any, must be enclosed. Documentation may take the form of photos/slides of own works/projects, videos, articles, publications etc. It is stressed that the expert selection committee, who has to evaluate the applicants, shall only consider the written application and the enclosed documentation.

The position is to be filled for a fixed term of up to 6 years. Appointment is on a group contract basis unless the appointee is already employed as a public servant in Denmark. The professorship is a Grade 37 position and the professor is paid a pensionable basic salary of 484.219 DKK. The professor is granted a fixed-term employment bonus to be determined through negotiations between the Schools of Visual Arts and the legitimate negotiating organization of the appointee. An individual bonus may be agreed on. The amount of individual bonuses and the terms of pension entitlement are established by agreement according to Danish legislation on fixed-term employment, consideration being had to the appointee’s possible status of public servant employee.

Appointment is according to Government Order No 1507 on the appointment of artistic/scientific staff at certain institutions of higher education under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture, as of December 14, 2006.

Professors attend to the administrative work of their school and participate in the work of both councils and committees as well as perform administrative duties in accordance with Government Order No 497 given by the Ministry of Culture as of June 21, 1995.

Application must be sent to: The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Schools of Visual Arts, Kongens Nytorv 1, PO Box 9014, DK-1022 Copenhagen K, Denmark, where it must be received no later than February 15, 2008, at 12 o’clock.

The Schools of Visual Arts invites all applicants irrespective of their age, sex, race, religion, or

ethnic group.

Attention is drawn to the fact that the application’s enclosures are expected to be collected; alternatively they will be returned by ordinary mail.
