Professor John Redmond, Dean of the Faculty of Art & Design, will be in Chicago in February 2010. To arrange an interview please contact [email protected]

The Faculty of Art & Design recognises that systematically developed visual outcomes constitute research. The doctoral program is built on the concept that research in art is in the artwork and that creative research outcomes build bridges between professional art practice and university research.

The candidate’s visual work is the focus of effort and examination (with a contextualising written exegesis). There is an extensive system of support for the studio-research, strengthened by coursework studies in research methods; integrating the studio work with its theoretical context, for the enrichment of both art and theory.

There are seminars for the presentation, discussion and critique of your visual research, and smaller free-form discussion sessions for candidates with related topics. There is also a weekly forum, where visiting artists and visual researchers are invited to speak about their own work. Each year a program is offered in Italy, using the Monash Centre in Prato, near Florence, incorporating the Venice Biennale every second year.

The Faculty’s energy comes from its vibrant community of faculty, postgraduate researchers, students and professional staff, who together focus on critically informed creative activity at the highest level. We are artists, architects, designers and theorists whose research, practice and teaching reflect the diversity of our fields.

Monash Alumni make a significant contribution to visual culture. They are the recipients of prestigious awards, competitive grants and commissions, and are represented in major national and international collections.

The Faculty of Art & Design is a member of the College Art Association and the Australian Council of University Art & Design Schools. Monash University is a member of the Group of Eight – Australia’s Leading Research Universities. It has more than 58,000 students across four continents, with campuses and centres in Australia, Italy, Malaysia and South Africa; and a strong record of innovative and progressive activities.
