The Department of Visual Arts within the Division of Arts and Humanities at UC San Diego (http://visarts.ucsd.edu is committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff and student body). We seek a specialist in the history, theory, and criticism of Modern/ Contemporary Latin American art and/or media (including Mexico, Central and South America). The department combines a highly regarded MFA program with an innovative Ph.D. program in Art and Media History, Theory and Criticism, and a new Ph.D. concentration in art practice. Our faculty, students, and graduates have an international reputation for investigating complex sites of interaction between artistic practice, history, theory and criticism. They also share a strong interest in Latin American art and culture. The archives of InSite, the groundbreaking cross-border art event, are held by the UCSD Library, and our faculty and students interact regularly with the Center for Iberian and Latin American Studies on campus. Candidates having interdisciplinary connections including, but not limited to, curatorial practice, public culture, new media, and diasporic studies are encouraged to apply.
We seek candidates whose research, teaching, or service have prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and inclusion in higher education. Applicants are asked to summarize their past or potential contributions to diversity in their personal statement. Contributions might include such things as providing leadership in teaching, mentoring, research or service towards building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment and/or increasing access or participation of individuals from historically underrepresented groups.
The candidate will teach undergraduate lecture and seminar courses, including a general survey course on Latin America art and/or media history, as well as graduate seminars attended by MFA, Ph.D and Ph.D (practice) students. The department offers the B.A., M.F.A., and Ph.D.
