Hermes Lecture
The Hermes Lecture is a biennial lecture by a distinguished visual artist on a topic related to the position of artists in the cultural and social field. The Hermes Lecture is the result of a collaboration between Hermes – an entrepreneurs’ network in Den Bosch – and the Research Group of Visual Art at AKV|St Joost Art Academy, Avans University, also based in Den Bosch. Hermes is committed to establishing and intensifying contacts between the art community and the business world. The Research Group of Visual Art, headed by Camiel van Winkel, researches the cultural position of the visual artist.

The Hermes Lecture aims to promote the contribution by contemporary artists to the critical and theoretical discourse of art and to reaffirm the place of this discourse in a public context. In 2006 Jeff Wall delivered the first Hermes Lecture. In 2008 the second lecture was given by Liam Gillick.

Martha Rosler
Martha Rosler (Brooklyn, NY) is a renowned artist who has created a rich oeuvre consisting of video works, photo/text montages, performances and projects on location since the early 1970s. She is the author of lucid and critical essays discussing the social and political context of art and the art world. Together with Allan Sekula, Mary Kelly and others, Rosler is part of a generation of artists who combined the language of conceptual art with a social and political agenda. Using a critical and feminist version of semiotics she has brought the neutrality of language and visual representations into question. Her photo montages comment on the way mass media tend to cloak wars and other geopolitical events in aspects of lifestyle, domesticity, sexuality, and modern comfort.
