Current students will talk about their experiences so far, such as what it’s like to produce a podcast for Kurt Andersen and the “Studio 360″ team, to get behind-the-scenes access at the Brooklyn Navy Yards with architecture critic Karrie Jacobs, or to create their own blogs with Gawker.com co-founder Elizabeth Spiers. D-Crit chair Alice Twemlow will give an overview of the program, and faculty members including the documentary film producer and director Adam Levy; the recipient of this year’s National Design Award for Design Mind Ralph Caplan; New York Times contributor Andrea Codrington; and design historian Russell Flinchum will speak about what students can expect from their classes. Stay for mimosas and donuts and the opportunity to chat with the students and faculty members; a great way to get to know us better.

D-Crit Students and Graduates Making Headlines and Bylines
Aileen Kwun was named 2010 Recipient of AIGA Winterhouse Awards for Design Writing in the Education category for her architectural critique of Lady Gaga.
Molly Heintz and D-Crit alum Emily Leibin are this year’s Philip Johnson Glass House fellows. They worked over the summer to launch the site Glass House Conversation Series.
Avinash Rajagopal continues writing for Metropolis on subjects ranging from designing for disaster relief and eco-tourism to designing city centers and vertical farming.
Alan Rapp is the managing editor of The New City Reader, a temporary newspaper published cumulatively as part of the Last Newspaper exhibition at the New Museum. Rapp also launched his own editing and book publishing consultancy, and is a recitation leader at Parsons The New School of Design.
Chappell Ellison, winner of the 2009 AIGA Winterhouse Education Award for Design Writing and an invited reporter at last year’s Aspen Design Summit, introduces herself as Etsy’s new editorial intern. Read about her new Etsy blog (and her related passion for TV lamps and camp shirts) here.
On the Cooper-Hewitt Design blog, recent D-Crit grads—who took a behind-the-scenes course with the museum’s curators in the lead up to the “Why Design Now?” Triennial—published their impressions of the exhibition. Angela Riecher’s piece on alternative burial caskets whipped up a storm of responses.
Last Spring, Mike Neal went where no D-Critter has gone before: on air for WNYC’s “Studio 360.” His segment profiled the Mars Desert Research station in Utah, where he resided while conducting research for his thesis. Listen to the radio podcast, and read more about Neal’s experiences of life in a Martian “tuna can.”
This July, Frederico Duarte and Becky Quintal launched and led “Putting Architecture in Its Place,” a week-long day camp program at the Canadian Centre for Architecture for sixteen teenage architecture buffs. Quintal is currently working as a researcher at OMA in Rotterdam. Duarte, now based in Lisbon, continues to write about design and architecture for publications such as Design Indaba Magazine, Icon, and Architecture Review.
