Students have access to the exceptional academic resources of our academic partners, Tufts and Northeastern universities, in addition to the full range of SMFA’s studio classes and resources. Our students work with advisors from SMFA’s international roster of faculty, explore professional development, have ample teaching opportunities, apply for internal and external exhibitions and grants, attend graduate seminars, develop annual colloquia and interact with distinguished visiting faculty and guest artists. Spring visiting artists include: Kristin Baker, Patti Smith, Matt Saunders, Daniel Dove, Dasha Shishkin, Tauba Auerbach, Nicole Cherubini, Alix Pearlstein, Temporary Services artists collective, Ali Al-Fatlaw and Wathiq Gzar Alameri, Guy Benfield and Amanda Coogan.
“The MFA program at the Museum School provides a supportive, challenging and critical environment in which students realize possibilities for their education and beyond,” says Tony Schwensen, director of the MFA program. “Here students build engaged and aware art practices that inform others in our community and reach far into the global, contemporary art world.”
Graduate Committee: Second-year MFA students build their own graduate committee, comprised of graduate advisors and faculty as well as curators and artists from institutions such as the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; MIT List Visual Arts Center; DeCordova Museum + Sculpture Park; Tufts University and the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston.
Exhibitions: Students select their own venue for their final thesis exhibition, which presents opportunities to showcase their work in an optimal setting. Independent exhibitions have appeared at Mills Gallery at the Boston Center for the Arts, Space Other, Tufts University Art Gallery, NK Gallery, Museum of the National Center of Afro-American Artists, Northeastern University and Lufthansa Studios among others.
Awards: The MFA program has produced 11 Joan Mitchell Grant Recipients since 1997, the most by any school to date, and three Fulbright Scholars since 2000. Our graduates teach at universities and colleges such as Massachusetts College of Art and Design, Wellesley College, School of Visual Arts, Chester College and the Art Institute of Boston at Lesley College. Recent alumni artists include Jowhara AlSaud, Nuno deCampos, Lalla Essaydi, Neeta Madahar, Sheila Pepe, Benjamin Sloat and Youngsuk Suh.

The mission of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston is to provide an education in the fine arts—for undergraduate and graduate artists—that is interdisciplinary and self-directed.
