Since its founding in 1991, the MFA in Visual Art program has been based on the principle of individualized learning. While in the program, students complete a series of interdisciplinary writing and research projects supervised by faculty members, as well as pursue their studio work with the guidance of an artist-teacher, chosen collaboratively with faculty input. These studies enable students to develop their own conception of progress and professionalism, while also facilitating the formation of a support system within one’s own community that will persist beyond graduate school experiences.

Faculty in the program are internationally known active artists, intellectuals, and teachers, and bring a wide array of interdisciplinary perspectives and ideas to every residency.

The MFA in Visual Art program offers a high level of critical and creative discourse to a wide range of students, working in a variety of mediums, empowering them to create and sustain vital and generative artistic practices.
