The Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA), is pleased to announce the outcome of 2011 Curatorial Opportunities program. Over 250 international applications were received by the CCA in response to the inaugural open call for two Curatorial Opportunities: the Young Curators Program and the Power Corporation of Canada Curatorial Internships Program.

The 2011 Young Curator is Dan Handel, who was selected for his project entitled “First, the forests”. His proposal is based on modern forestry’s relationship to architecture and landscape design. Handel’s intent is to bring ‘the forests’ back into the design discourse. He will develop an exhibition at the CCA in 2012 and will use resources and materials from the CCA Collection as well as additional material from other sources to explore design attitudes towards forests. Handel is a Ph.D. candidate at the Technion Institute of Technology, Tel Aviv, Israel and a Masters graduate from Harvard Graduate School of Design, Cambridge (Mass). He will be in residence at the CCA for three months.

The 2011 Power Corporation of Canada Curatorial interns are Marta Masferrer Juliol and Cerys Wilson. Both will be in residence in Montreal for nine months.

Marta Masferrer Juliol is an architect and graduate of the Escola Technica Superior d’Arquitectura de Barcelona. Ms. Juliol’s application to the CCA stems from her pedagogical and curatorial endeavours, having recently been involved in the project Teach architecture – learn architecture in Girona and being highly motivated by the promotion of educational programs related to architecture.

Cerys Wilson is a photographer and a recent Masters graduate of the History of Photography from the University of St. Andrews, Scotland. While at the CCA, Ms. Wilson will instigate further learning and conduct an examination of photography’s relationship to cultural, political and historical thought. She will take advantage of the CCA collections of drawings and prints, photographs and models, helping her to trace a path of creation from initial concept to ultimate construct.

The successful applicants were selected based on the strength of their projects and their resonance with the research interests and curatorial direction of the CCA. The two Curatorial Opportunities were launched by the CCA in March 2011, in response to an international Colloquium entitled “The Canadian Centre for Architecture in an expanding curatorial field” held at the CCA with the support of Power Corporation of Canada in November 2010, and a renewed interest that is emerging around curatorial practise within the field of architecture.

“We have been overwhelmed by the response to our open call this Spring. Increasingly, curatorial practice is emerging as a critical component of the architectural profession. Accordingly, the CCA is keen to complement academic programs and hone the skills of the next generation of students. We are sharing our expertise, resources and archives with these young graduates who benefit from this unique educational opportunity, as much as the institution will be inspired by their talent,” says Mirko Zardini, Director and Chief Curator of the CCA.

The 2012 Curatorial Opportunities applications will be available in the Fall. For further information about the Curatorial Programs please refer to the website: www.cca.qc.ca/curatorialopportunities
