Learn More about the Program

The M.A. in Studio Art: Three Summer Program in Berlin utilizes a contemporary atelier model of studio instruction, with classes designed to organically intersect and flow into one another. The instructional approach takes many forms, including workshops, lectures, seminars, and critiques. Students are expected to develop and refine an individual artistic voice and are regularly provided with personal instruction from faculty and visiting artists, curators, and theorists.

The NYU facilities in Berlin house newly constructed studio spaces for sculpture, digital art, and painting and drawing. Contemporary art theory is fused throughout the program with ongoing lectures, seminars, and visits to museums, galleries, artist studios, and other cultural sites. Students also have the option of studying in Berlin for two summers, and then completing the program in New York City for the third summer session.

The M.A. in Studio Art: Three Summer Program in Berlin provides artists, students of art, and current and prospective art teachers an opportunity to do serious creative studio work for university credit within the most innovative contemporary art scene in Europe.

Application Deadline: February 1, 2012

About the Department
The NYU Steinhardt Department of Art and Art Professions offers B.F.A., M.F.A., M.A., and Advanced Certificate programs in Studio Art, as well as M.A. Programs in Art Education, Visual Arts Administration, Art Therapy, and Costume Studies.

The Department’s Art Professions programs complement the Studio Art programs by bringing Visual Arts Administration, Art Education, Art Therapy, and Costume Studies into dialogue with studio art practice.

The Department’s six-story Beaux Arts building in the East Village is a true interdisciplinary community, housing studios, classrooms and exhibition space, as well as shops, labs, and facilities for painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking, photography, metalsmithing, video, and digital art. The Commons and Rosenberg Galleries, and the Einstein Auditorium host public exhibitions of student work, performances, and visiting artist talks each week.

The Department’s 80WSE Gallery, on Washington Square Park, organizes curated exhibitions, screenings, and performances throughout the year. 80WSE will open an exhibition dedicated to the work of the renowned artist collective Gran Fury in January 2012, and M.F.A.
