The School of Fine Art comprises four programmes defined by subject: Painting, Photography, Printmaking and Sculpture. Each programme engages with the specific discourse of the discipline, its practices, histories and theories and offers an in-depth study as well as an ongoing questioning of the boundaries that define the discipline.

Convening talks by artists, critics, philosophers, curators and cultural practitioners from various fields, the School provides a space where cross-disciplinary debate and information on contemporary cultural themes and issues can flourish. Its overarching role is to facilitate student engagement with practices that run across the subject as a whole. The School includes the Moving Image Studio, offering academic and technical support for students who work with film, video and lens based installations and the Drawing Studio, providing a series of workshops and lectures open to the College.

Research is a key area in the School of Fine Art. All MPhil and PhD students contribute to the Fine Art Research seminar, presenting regularly their studio work and research papers to the seminar group. The Image and Language Research Group convenes seminars and colloquia on art, philosophy, literature, theory and criticism, promoting innovative approaches to the image, writing and questions of representation.

The School is based in the Royal College of Art’s new 33 million GBP campus development in Battersea, at the heart of what is fast becoming London’s newest and most vibrant creative quarter.

In 2012/13 College will allocate nearly 3 million GBP in bursaries to eligible students towards the fees and the costs of living in London. These are available to UK and EU students on a competitive basis.

The four Fine Art programmes—Painting, Photography, Printmaking and Sculpture—are accepting applications, now and interviews for programme places will be held in March. For further details, go to www.rca.ac.uk/school-of-fine-art.
