Apply by February 1, 2012 to start your graduate education in Summer 2012 in NYU Steinhardt’s Department of Art and Art Professions. Earn a Master’s Degree in Studio Art over three summers in Berlin, or a Master’s Degree in Art Education in one concentrated year of study in New York City.

The M.A. in Studio Art: Three Summer Program in Berlin provides artists, students of art, and current and prospective art teachers an opportunity to do serious creative studio work for university credit within the most innovative contemporary art scene in Europe. The program utilizes a contemporary atelier model of studio instruction, with classes designed to organically intersect and flow into one another.  Students are expected to develop and refine an individual artistic voice and are regularly provided with personal instruction from faculty and visiting artists, curators, and theorists. Students have the option of studying in Berlin for two summers, and then completing the program in New York City for the third summer session.

Instructions for How to Apply

The M.A. in Art Education program is offered in a concentrated 12-month format with coursework starting in May of 2012 in New York City. The program is designed for people who wish to gain certification and pursue graduate-level professional preparation as artist-teachers in public and private schools, museums, community-based programs, and other alternative educational sites. It also prepares students to be innovative researchers and strong advocates of art in schools, combining a foundation in critical theory with a solid grounding in practice. With a special focus on contemporary art and its social context, the program conceptualizes the artist-teacher as cultural producer, intellectual, and activist.
