The core substance of the two-year, multidisciplinary Curating, Managing and Mediating Art (CuMMA) Master’s degree programme is on contemporary art and its audiences. The programme focuses especially on issues related to the presentation and reception of art, and its content is actively developed in line with the changing demands of the field.

The curriculum is based on the so-called educational turn in curating, on gaining both theoretical and practical understanding of the phenomenon and its implications. The synergy between the curatorial and gallery educational approach throughout our courses has evolved directly from the set of expertise grounded strongly in the Aalto University’s Art Department. Emphasis is put on developing ways to promote each student’s own curatorial, theoretical and educational thinking and on how to understand various curatorial and communal processes. On the course the pedagogical models of shared expertise and exploratory learning have been applied in order to create an open, conversational and dialogical space for learning and acting.

From 2012 onwards, the teaching of CuMMA will be provided in English, and Professor Nora Sternfeld will take lead of the programme. The studies and activities are conducted increasingly in cooperation with actors and institutions from the international field of visual art.
