Founded in 1987, the independent curatorial training program, the École du Magasin, was set up to provide a professional environment for a rigorous combination of research and practice. Since its inception, emphasis has been placed on the exhibition as an open platform in which different fields or strategies of representation can be drawn upon. The École encourages various curatorial approaches that include not only how a project takes form but also how aesthetics can be combined with the aim of providing information; how to take into account and integrate newly developed network cultures and technology; how a curatorial project can be understood in a given context; and, finally, how an exhibition can express the identity of a collective and the cohesiveness of a group project.

The conception and production of a collective curatorial project, presented in public, is a constant aim. Each session lasts nine months, from October to early July, and is divided into two stages: from the establishment of a framework and a collective working method, to the production of the final curatorial project. Both stages require their specific form of advisory and pedagogical frameworks that the École manages in relation with the project advisor, guest lecturers and field visits.

The program has two objectives: Firstly, to complete the academic training of the participants by presenting them with theoretical and practical knowledge with which they are not familiar and by introducing them to other cultures. Secondly, to lead the participants into the professional world through direct contact with its actors and through the analysis of curatorial practice.

Session expenses are covered by the École. Participants are not required to pay tuition fees, but must assure their own living expenses.

Session 21 of the École du Magasin is pleased to announce
THE WHOLE WORLD IS WATCHING

The Whole World is Watching explores the desire for social transformation accompanying 1970’s video innovations and the forms of control that paradoxically resulted from the democratization of technological equipment. Researching the local history of Vidéogazette, a “community televised journal” where inhabitants produced their own television, the project brings together archival and video works to investigate the collective space allowed by technology in its contrasting characteristics: a self-determined community where individuals gather, a laboratory for future political scenarios, a cacophony of isolated and atomized voices, and a territory claimed by corporate power.

Participants to Session 21 are: Corrado Salzano, Shoghig Halajian and Sarah Sandler
Opening 27 May 2012 at Magasin-CNAC, Grenoble
