California College of the Arts invites the public to visit its San Francisco and Oakland campuses to see the remarkable work of our students who are soon to be graduating. Help us cheer them on as they bring their undergrad and graduate careers to a close and get ready to embark upon their exciting future endeavors.

 

Events include everything from exhibitions to symposia, lectures, and fashion shows. Almost all of the events are free. Below is a summary. The full list is constantly being updated at cca.edu/upstart.

 

April 6, 20, and 27
Word. World. 2012

Poetry, prose, and writings in between by graduate students in the MFA Program in Writing. Each reading is followed by a reception.

 

April 10
Hearsay: Readings by Writing and Literature Seniors
CCA Oakland campus, 5212 Broadway, Nahl Hall
7:30pm
Readings by graduating seniors in Writing and Literature. All HearSay events include delicious refreshments.

 

April 17–28
25th Annual Barclay Simpson Award Exhibition
CCA Oakland campus, 5212 Broadway, Oliver Art Center

Hours: Mon.-Fri., 8:30am-4:30pm (Wed. open until 7pm); Sat.–Sun., 10am–6pm
A juried exhibition of award-winning artworks by students in the Graduate Program in Fine Arts.

 

April 19
Visual Studies Senior Symposium

Graduating seniors in the Visual Studies Program publicly present their theses, followed by a reception.

 

April 19–May 19
On Apology: Curatorial Practice Thesis Exhibition
CCA San Francisco campus, 1111 Eighth Street, the Wattis Institute
Reception: Thur., April 19, 6–8pm
Hours: Tues.–Fri., noon–8pm; Sat., 10am–6pm
Graduating students in the Graduate Program in Curatorial Practice investigate the notion of the apology in contemporary art. Featured artists include Erick Beltran, Keren Cytter, Omer Fast, Shaun Gladwell, and Slavs and Tatars.

 

April 21
Spring Fair
CCA Oakland campus, 5212 Broadway
11am–3pm
All are invited to shop for one-of-a-kind, handmade, affordable gifts at this bustling arts bazaar. Discover unique paintings, drawings, prints, cards, jewelry, ceramics, hand-blown glass, clothing, photography, textiles, and more while enjoying live jazz music and tasty treats.

Visual and Critical Studies Spring Symposium

Graduating Visual and Critical Studies students share their thesis projects. Topics include the consumption of metaphorical bodies via art, violent videos authored by Mexican drug cartels and shared through social media, and the place of the natural history display in the 21st-century museum.

 

May 1
Humble Pie vol. 6 Launch Party
CCA Oakland campus, 5212 Broadway, Nahl Hall
7:30–9:30pm
Humble Pie is CCA’s undergraduate literary arts journal, publishing poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, and visual art. The evening will include readings by writers in the sixth edition, plus fresh, real-life pies a la mode, with crispy crusts.

Interface Exhibition

Graduating MBA in Design Strategy students present their projects from Venture Studio, the final course in the program.

A high-caliber runway presentation with professional models, featuring the original collections of our senior Fashion Design students.
