Sotheby’s Institute of Art – London is now accepting applications for its full-time fifteen-week Semester Study programmes designed for students with a keen interest in art and its markets or those considering a career in the international art world. Semester Study at Sotheby’s Institute offers university students and working professionals the opportunity to gain comprehensive knowledge in a number of different subject areas, including Art Business, Arts of Asia, Western Art, and Decorative Art and Design. Each course combines academic study with real world professional skills and takes full advantage of the rich cultural resources that London offers.

Individuals with diverse educational experiences and professional interests are encouraged to apply. Semester Study programmes are validated by the University of Manchester and course credits may be transferrable for undergraduate students. The Institute’s course offerings vary each semester and some may be taken on a part-time basis. Autumn courses begin on 3 September and run through 13 December; Spring courses begin 21 January and run through 10 May.

Semester Study Courses

Foundations of Western Art (Autumn and Spring)
This course explore the history and development of art in the western world from ancient Greek beginnings to the present day, giving considerable attention to the broader social, political and cultural contexts which defined the shape of artistic achievement across a very long period.

Art and Business (Autumn and Spring)
This course offers an introduction to the history of art and design and the ways in which art has been made, sold and collected. Students choose to focus either on the period from 1600 to 1900 or on Modern and Contemporary art and learn the fundamentals of management, legal issues, and market analysis.

Arts of Asia and their Markets (Spring)
Students acquire an understanding of the rich artistic traditions of the leading religions and philosophies of Asia, alongside an insight into the workings of the current market for Asian art.

Decorative Art and Design (Spring)
This course combines an examination of the historical and stylistic development of Western European decorative arts, design and interiors of the early 17th to late 20th centuries, with an introduction to the professional world of working with objects from these centuries. (Spring only)
