Since its humble beginnings a little over a century ago, film has developed into a powerful cultural force. In recent years the field has undergone profound technological and economic changes that have democratized the means of production and transformed traditional career paths.
A New MFA for 21st-Century Filmmakers
In fall 2013, California College of the Arts (CCA), an international leader in art and design education, will launch a new MFA in Film specifically designed to meet the challenges of filmmaking in the 21st century. Open to filmmakers working in documentary, narrative, and alternative forms, the program is for students who are ready to seize the opportunities provided by this new media landscape.
About the Program
CCA’s MFA in Film challenges its students to find their place as architects of a new cinema culture. The curriculum combines intensive focus on the development of artistic vision, the study of media language and form in historical and contemporary contexts, and the acquisition of business and entrepreneurial skills necessary for success. The program encourages experimentation with new forms of cinematic expression and the development of new strategies and infrastructures to support meaningful careers.
Program Leadership and Faculty
Two-time Academy Award winner Rob Epstein and underground film and media artist Brook Hinton lead an award-winning faculty of filmmakers and media artists who are passionate about the moving image as a living, evolving cultural force.
“The filmmaking landscape has changed dramatically and will remain in a state of flux for some time to come,” says co-chair Brook Hinton. “While there are viable career paths in the independent and mainstream film industries and in the art world, we believe students must expand their thinking. In order to develop a sustainable practice, the contemporary filmmaker must be equal parts artistic visionary, expert craftsperson, and entrepreneur.”

Founded in 1907, California College of the Arts (CCA) offers 22 undergraduate, nine graduate, and two post-professional degree programs in the areas of fine arts, architecture, design, and writing.
