OCAD University sits at the nexus of creativity, critical inquiry and cultural stewardship and offers a unique, transdisciplinary environment where graduate students pursue studio-based practice and scholarly investigation. The graduate programs at OCAD University offer academics, artists, designers and industry leaders an unmatched opportunity for studio learning and academic research. Located in the heart of Toronto, Canada’s largest centre for design, culture and business and one of the world’s most multicultural cities, Toronto is a vibrant metropolis that brings a diversity of creative forces together.  Drawing from a long-established history of art and design production these three scholarly programs share the quest for a critical and honed understanding of contemporary cultural production.

Contemporary Art, Design and New Media Art Histories (MA)
The MA program in Contemporary Art, Design and New Media Art Histories prepares students to investigate the continuum and complexity of current creative cultural activity. This program supports the production of pioneering research into established and emerging art and design practices. OCAD University’s program is one of the few art history graduate programs in existence that concentrates solely upon contemporary artists, technology and issues attending current and recent cultural production. Constructed around the interrogation of issues of temporality, cultural expression, and cultural consumption the program facilitates students to undertake original research into the contemporary histories of visual, design and media cultures.

Criticism & Curatorial Practice (MFA)
The Master of Fine Arts in Criticism & Curatorial Practice combines history, theory and criticism with professional curatorial practice to explore and experiment with the breadth and depth of contemporary art, media and design. While the majority of curatorial and museum studies programs are streams within an art history program leading to a Master of Arts degree, this program focuses on the professional practices of curating and criticism in combination with theory and history, leading to the Master of Fine Arts degree.

The graduate faculty include eminent scholars, critics, practitioners and museum professionals. A central distinguishing feature of the program is the institutional relationship with the Art Gallery of Ontario.

Interdisciplinary Master’s in Art, Media and Design (MDes, MA & MFA)
The Interdisciplinary Master’s in Art, Media & Design (IAMD) challenges students to investigate, research, and produce creative works that combine art, design, and interdisciplinary academic study to create new, hybrid forms of visual and social research and creative production. The student’s primary research interest and chosen emphasis between art or design studio practice and theoretical inquiry will determine whether the degree earned is an MFA, MDes, or MA.
