The Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) invites nominations and applications for the position of Director of the Mount Royal School of Art. This position will begin in the Fall 2013 Semester.
The Mount Royal School of Art was created in 1974 as a multidisciplinary program for graduate study in fine arts. The program seeks to broaden definitions of art making, illuminate and discuss current and historical ideas in the different disciplines, help students toward their own profession, and assist them in finding their own voices. Because Mount Royal is not a media-specific program, students are encouraged to work in the ways most appropriate to their individual research. That study can be focused within a specific media or cross over and into other disciplines and media.
The Mount Royal School of Art is a two year, full-time program enrolling about 28 students. It is housed in the newly renovated Graduate Center located in Baltimore’s Station North Arts District, one of the most vibrant and growing art scenes in the country. The Center includes spacious private studios, a grad lab for digital work, ready access to shops, exhibition space, and other resources beneficial to making and discussing art. Renovations to a second building of the Graduate Studies Center are being designed now.
The Director of the Mount Royal School of Art is the educational leader of the program. S/he reviews, interviews and selects candidates from the applicant pool; acts as principle mentor to the students; creates the vision and organization for the program; and leads in the selection of other supporting faculty and visiting artists. The Director reports to the Vice Provost for Research and Graduate Studies and works with the other graduate directors to oversee areas of common interest and coordination. In order to fill this important position, the Maryland Institute seeks a professionally active artist/educator with the vision and experience necessary to respond to the diversity and pluralism of contemporary artistic expression—including non-traditional approaches and mediums. An advanced degree is preferred and college level teaching experience required. The salary and benefits are nationally competitive and commensurate with the College’s policies.
