The School of Art and Design in the College of the Arts at Portland State University seeks a dynamic Director of the School and Professor in any one of the fields of Art Practices, Art History, or Graphic Design. This is a tenured, 1.0 FTE, 12-month position, commencing fall of 2013. The Director will provide creative leadership and vision for a burgeoning department of 20 full-time and 70 part-time faculty, with 32 M.F.A. students and approximately 1100 undergraduate majors. The School is comprised of three concentration areas—Art Practices, Art History, and Graphic Design—each with its own coordinator whose role is to support the Director in managing the concentration. Support staff includes four full-time and three part-time employees.

PSU is located in downtown Portland, Oregon, and is the largest, fastest growing, and most diverse institution in the Oregon University System. The city is widely rated as one of the most livable in the country, with a vibrant arts community including the Portland Art Museum, Museum of Contemporary Craft, and numerous commercial and nonprofit galleries.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide excellent academic leadership for the School of Art and Design.
- Fulfill the regular administrative roles and responsibilities of Director involving budget oversight, personnel, teaching assignments, curriculum, and effective student advising.
- Foster a collegial environment conducive to open discourse among faculty of diverse strengths and perspectives.
- Advocate strongly for the needs of the School within the College of the Arts and the University.
- Strengthen the School’s ties to the city’s other arts organizations, and represent its mission in regional, national, and international art arenas.
- Collaborate with faculty in the development of a five-year plan for assessment and future growth management.
- Engage in energetic fundraising activities in partnership with the Dean and College Development Director.
- Teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses in the candidate’s area of specialization.
- Maintain an appropriate professional level of scholarly recognition.
- Create an environment that acknowledges, encourages, and celebrates differences.
- Function and communicate effectively and respectfully within the context of varying beliefs, behaviors, orientations, identities, and cultural backgrounds.
- Seek opportunities to gain experience working and collaborating in a diverse, multicultural, and inclusive setting with a willingness to change for continual improvement.
- Adhere to all of PSU’s policies including the policies on Prohibited Discrimination & Harassment and the Professional Standards of Conduct.

Required / minimum qualifications
- A terminal degree in the candidate’s discipline (Ph.D. or M.F.A.);
- A record of teaching experience, scholarship, and service worthy of a tenured appointment at the rank of professor;
- Knowledge of contemporary art and critical theory;
- Three years minimum proven success as an administrator;
- Strong professional and interpersonal skills;
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills;

Preferred qualifications
- Demonstrated ability in fundraising.
- Demonstrated ability to work within an urban arts community.

Compensation
Starting annual salary USD 106,000, which includes Director’s stipend, or commensurate with qualifications and experience. (For additional information click here).
