The College Art Association (CAA) invites emerging scholars to apply for the Meiss/Mellon Author’s Book Award. The award—funded by a one-year grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation—provides financial relief directly to early-career scholars in art history and visual studies who are responsible for paying for rights and permissions for images in their publications. Awards will be made twice during the year (in the spring and fall) in conjunction with CAA’s Millard Meiss Publication Fund awards to publishers. CAA anticipates awarding between eight and ten Meiss/Mellon Author’s Book Awards in 2013.
Successful applicants are emerging scholars who (1) have been awarded a PhD within the last six years, and (2) are under contract with a publisher for a manuscript on art history or visual studies. Recipients will be selected on the basis of the quality and financial need of their project. Applications must be made jointly by author and publisher.

A similar award (SAH Mellon/Author Awards) for emerging scholars publishing monographs on architectural history and the built environment is being administered by the Society for Architectural Historians.
