Ticio Escobar is an art critic, writer, and anthropologist. Formerly Minister of Culture of the Government of Paraguay, and co-founder of the Center for Visual Arts/Museo del Barro in Asunción, Paraguay, he also curated the Triennial of Chile (2009), Other Contemporary Problematic Coexistences at the Biennial of Valencia (Spain, 2007), and Three Frontiers at the 6th Biennial of the Mercosur (Porto Alegre, Brazil; 2007), among others. Escobar has written numerous books and articles, including The Beauty of Others: Indigenous Art of Paraguay (1993), Art out of Itself (2009), The Minimum Distance: Four Essays (2010), and the section on Paraguay in Latin American Art in the Twentieth Century, edited by Edward Sullivan (1996). He directed the program “Identities in Transit,” sponsored by the Rockefeller Foundation, from 1999 to 2004 and was awarded a Guggenheim fellowship in 1998 to study the relationships between images and political power.
Osvaldo Salerno will join Mr. Escobar in the talk. An artist and co-founder/director of the Center for Visual Arts/Museo del Barro, Salerno has worked to expand the definition of printmaking in his native Paraguay and has studied graffiti as representations of marginal political points of view circumventing censorship. After the fall of the Paraguayan military dictatorship in February 1989, Salerno shifted his focus to the role of popular and folk art in complicating mainstream historical narratives.
Patricia Phelps de Cisneros Visiting Artists and Critics program brings key figures from Latin America to Hunter College to address topics in contemporary art and scholarship through talks with students and the New York community. In addition to this forum, Cisneros Visiting Artists and Critics conduct studio visits and seminar discussions with Hunter M.F.A. and M.A. students during their residency.
