Applications are being accepted for The Power of Art, a three-day workshop in Washington, DC that explores strategies for using art to engage and teach academic skills to students with different learning profiles of strengths and challenges.
Celebrating its 20th year, The Power of Art is a three-day workshop in Washington, DC that explores strategies for using art to engage and teach academic skills to students with different learning styles. The Power of Art will include direct experience with a variety of learning strategies, tours and workshops at The Lab School, activity-oriented tours of the Smithsonian Institution, and discussions with leaders from the fields of art, art education, special education and museums. Participants will be encouraged to synthesize and adapt ideas, resources, and activities they encounter during The Power of Art for implementation in their own schools and communities. Art teachers are encouraged to apply in partnership with their principals and/or cultural partners.
The Power of Art is a partnership between The Lab School of Washington, DC and the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation in collaboration with the Smithsonian Institution.
Hotel accommodations and all meals are provided from the evening of April 25 through midday on April 28. Limited travel funds are available.
Forty attendees will be selected through an application process. Acceptance for The Power of Art is competitive. Applications are available at www.labschool.org/powerofart and are due by Friday, March 8, 2013.

Thursday, April 25
Participants arrive in Washington, DC
Welcome reception for all participants with an overview of the program and a presentation about the history of The Power of Art, celebrating the 20th anniversary of a friendship and partnership between The Lab School, Robert Rauschenberg and the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation.
Friday, April 26
The Lab School, a K-12 school renowned for engaging students with learning differences through the arts, will present strategies through tours and workshops with teaching artists and Chris Rauschenberg. Participants will experience firsthand the role the arts play in The Lab School, where students spend a significant portion of each day in arts classes carefully planned to enhance academic achievement, build organizational skills and strengthen self-esteem.
Saturday, April 27
The Smithsonian Institution will be a dynamic context for activity-oriented tours featuring programs for young adults with learning differences and programs that use art to engage students in history, science and culture. Programs to be explored in-depth include Art lab at the Hirshhorn Museum and Art Cart at the Smithsonian American Art Museum and, during lunch at the National Museum of the American Indian, a presentation on native plants as creative media. Participants will also have opportunities to experience programs at the National Museum of American History, Freer/Sackler, and the National Museum of Natural History.
Sunday, April 28
Celebratory brunch discussion of the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation Power of Art implementation grants will culminate The Power of Art. Participants depart in the afternoon/evening.
The Power of Art is funded by the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation.
