SOMA Summer is a unique six-week program for visual artists conducted in English in Mexico City.

SOMA Summer offers a series of short seminars and workshops led by a selection of renowned Mexican and international artists. Participants have also the possibility of meeting weekly with a variety of artists and curators for individual critiques. Activities are designed to promote intense creative work and artistic dialogue.

SOMA Summer will introduce participants to the very dynamic art scene in Mexico City. A number of visits to museums and artists studios are scheduled. At the end of the program, participants will present their work/research in an open studio event.

Though not exclusively, workshops and seminars this summer will focus on the re-performance of history. Through examination of performance and its mediation (photo, video, and other forms of documentation), the group will explore the ways in which narrative, appropriation, fact/fiction and other devices simultaneously question and shape ideological subject positions both within individual and mass consciousness. Conventions of storytelling, archival research and the role of memory will all figure into group discussion.

Application procedures and a detailed list of activities scheduled for this summer can be found here or via email at [email protected].

The application format can be found here.
The deadline to register for the program is Monday, April 1st, 2013.

SOMA Summer is part of SOMA, an experimental pedagogical project launched in 2010 conceived to promote discussion and exchange in the field of contemporary art.
