Master of Applied Arts | Resident and Low Residency Program

Emily Carr University of Art + Design’s Master of Applied Art (MAA) provides a climate for creativity that prepares students in Visual Art and Media Arts to become professional creators who take risks, think unconventionally, foster change and contribute to the global cultural economy.

The MAA program adopts an interdisciplinary framework to support emergent forms of cultural production. Courses in studio practice, research, and critical theory integrate methodologies that span diverse art forms and learning models. The program gives students the flexibility to explore, challenge and expand their creative knowledge in rigorous exchange with core faculty who are leading artists and scholars in their fields.

The Master of Applied Arts (MAA) is a 21-month resident program located in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The focus of the program is on individual and/or collaborative research informed by contemporary issues and developed through ongoing analysis and critique. Students work together, approaching diverse concerns and research interests from their respective disciplinary perspectives. Course work in critical studies and studio disciplines reference and explore common threads in critical methodologies.

The Master of Applied Art (MAA) Low Residency is a 28-month program for practicing artists and working professionals who want to stay based in their home communities, but who wish to undertake a stimulating and rewarding course of study in a thriving learning environment alongside their professional commitments. The program is structured primarily around three four-week summer intensive residencies on campus in Vancouver during July. These semesters exceed a full-time schedule and are a period of intense development in response to significant interaction with faculty and visiting artists.
