The Maryland Institute College of Art is pleased to host the 2013 AICAD Conference, themed “New Paradigms in Teaching and Learning.” College presidents, chief academic officers, and faculty from AICAD member schools will converge on Baltimore for a joint exploration of deep changes coming to higher education.

Join your AICAD colleagues in a wide-ranging discussion of what we are all committed to—teaching and learning in the arts during this unique juncture in history.

The conference will focus on the premise that the cultural, technological, and economic conditions affecting art and design education today argue for bold new approaches in the form and organizational framework of its delivery as well as its content. Online classes such as MOOCS, new research in brain science and learning, community-based / project-based learning, the skyrocketing costs of college, and much more are all combining to drive us toward re-thinking deeply about the institutions we operate.

The conference begins with three prominent plenary speakers:

Robert Root-Bernstein, Professor of Physiology, Michigan State University and author of Sparks of Genius will talk on  “Teaching Creativity: Tools for Thinking”

Mariale Hardiman, Professor and Assistant Dean, School of Education, Johns Hopkins University will present her research in “The Brain-Targeted Teaching Model for 21st Century Schools”

Michelle Rhee-Weise, Senior Research Fellow, Clayton Christen sen Institute, will offer insights on “Bracing for Disruption in Higher Education”

In all, about 48 presentations –formal talks or seminars—are scheduled for the three day conference. For a full schedule of presentations, visit the conference website at www.mica.edu/aicad.
