Northumbria University and BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art have joined forces to create a prestigious facility for contemporary art, research and education in the vibrant heart of Newcastle upon Tyne. Our MFA programme is situated in the award-winning BxNU Institute of Contemporary Art at BALTIC 39.

The two-year MFA is unique. You will be taught by internationally active artists, engage with collaborative events led by BALTIC Professor Christine Borland and participate in a dynamic postgraduate studio culture enhanced by BALTIC’s curatorial staff.

The spacious, purpose-designed studios at BALTIC 39 are the focal-point of the course where you will be supported to develop your individual practice, through experimentation and critical reflection; you will also have access to excellent workshop facilities and support from artist-technicians and technical staff across Northumbria University’s extensive campus. The programme encourages you to consider your practice in relation to social and cultural processes as well as art-historical precedents, endorsing a multi-disciplinary approach to making and research. Distinguished and internationally respected practitioners provide regular tutorial guidance and critical feedback; teaching is facilitated by the BxNU partners—the MFA and wider Northumbria Fine Art staff, the BALTIC Professor and curators from BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art.

The MFA course sits within a wider studio culture of postgraduate research, with weekly colloquium conversations involving the PhD, MRes and Art and Education MA students also resident in studios at BALTIC 39. The MFA course benefits from direct proximity to BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art’s stunning 300sq m, top floor galleries at BALTIC 39. Programmed and managed by BALTIC, the galleries provide artists and guest curators the opportunity and creative freedom to test the boundaries of critical art practice.

As an MFA student you will have opportunities to develop proposals in response to the gallery’s experimental exhibition programme as well as participating in and contributing to talks and symposia. In addition you will participate in the partnership’s innovative programme for critical dialogue, Peer to Peer, which embodies the spirit of openness and exchange at BALTIC 39.
