For its graduate program Ästhetiken des Virtuellen (The Aesthetics of the Virtual), designed as a three-year course and with an academic focus on art, Hochschule für bildende Künste Hamburg (University of Fine Arts, HFBK) is awarding ten research scholarships with the option of completing a PhD, as of January 1.

For some decades now, “virtual” technologies have been gaining importance in both social and artistic terms. At the same time, to date the aesthetic and epistemic structure of the “virtual” has remained unclear. The postgraduate program Ästhetiken des Virtuellen, designed as a three-year course, devotes itself to this desideratum. Ten scholarship holders will be given the opportunity to conduct academic and artistic research as part of HFBK’s doctoral program. Their work will be supervised by HFBK artists and academics and by the University of Hamburg. The substantive debate will then be conducted in depth in interdisciplinary colloquia, symposia, lecture series, seminars and method workshops.

We invite you to use your own projects to assist with the program’s work and, at the same time, to study towards a PhD in art. HFBK’s doctoral system allows not only for academic doctorates but also for the possibility of the kind of doctorate in which art in practice plays a constitutive role. Accordingly, these scholarships can be awarded both to academics and to artists. More information on the graduate program is available from the website.

The scholarships amount to 1,275 euros per month and involve a compulsory presence in Hamburg. Application requirements are an academic qualification from a university (Master’s, other degree) and an academic interest in the relevant subject.

For your application please use the online form. Applications are due October 31.

The application documents should comprise:
– resumé
– current degree certificate
– synopsis of your proposed research project
– artistic portfolio

As well as uploading your files online, you should also submit them in hard copy to:
