The School of Art + Design at Portland State University, Oregon’s largest and only urban university, invites applications to its Master of Fine Arts in Contemporary Art Practice programs in Social Practice and Studio Practice.

Our Social Practice program is composed of a unique combination of individual research, group work, and experiential learning. The program’s blend of critical and professional practice, collaborative social engagement, and transdisciplinary exploration produces an immersive educational environment. The three-year Social Practice program’s flexible residency model allows for travel and even the ability for students to reside outside of Portland during their course of study.

Our Studio Practice program is built around a core of research-intensive creative investigation, the two-year, full-residency program is dedicated to interdisciplinary experimentation and the exploration of ideas through the experience of making. Students are supported in a range of disciplines, from the traditional to the emerging, as they consider the various ways art can live in and beyond the studio. We provide a variety of resources and experiences including close ties with resident faculty; dialogue with visiting artists and scholars; seminars in current issues and contemporary art history; exhibition and travel opportunities.

Located in the heart of Portland, Oregon, our School is a vital part of a thriving, nationally recognized arts community. Both programs host regular public lectures and conversations with local, national and international artists as a key component in our curriculum and community engagement.

Some of our many visiting artists, present and past, include Richard Jackson, Critical Art Ensemble, Julie Ault, Paul Ramirez Jonas, Pedro Reyes, Pablo Helguera, Rick Lowe, Chris Johanson, Luis Camnitzer, Layla Ali, Julia Dault, Stanya Kahn, Brian Bress, Anna Craycroft, Sara Greenberger Rafferty, Yvonne Rainer (co-sponsored with Pacific Northwest College of Art), Euan Macdonald, Jennifer West, Wendy White, Paul Pfeiffer (co-sponsored with PSU’s Department of Architecture), Léonie Guyer, Joseph Park, Kenneth Goldsmith, Laurel Nakadate, James Yood, Hasan Elahi, George Kuchar, Sam Durant, Barry Sanders, Stephanie Syjuco, Hank Willis Thomas, Mark Dion, Frances Stark, Mierle Laderman Ukeles, Daniel Bozhkov, Lucky Dragons, Andrea Zittel, Buster Simpson, Andrea Bowers, Anissa Mack, Y0UNG-HAE CHANG (HEAVY INDUSTRIES), and Edgar Heap of Birds.
