University of the Arts Helsinki represents the recent consolidation of three separate degree-granting academies: Theatre Academy, Academy of Fine Arts, and Sibelius Academy. This new synergy of artistic fields in one university greatly expands study opportunities for our students. Annually the University has 300 performances, concerts, and exhibitions. The university is situated in Helsinki, a culturally vibrant, human-scale city with several major international universities and easy connections to the rest of Europe, Scandinavia, the Baltics, and the world.

The Theatre Academy provides tuition-free degree programmes, facilities, and research opportunities at a professional level in the performing arts.

In spring 2015, the Theatre Academy will hold international auditions for three programmes: Master’s degree in Choreography, Master’s degree in Dance, and Master’s degree in Live Art and Performance Studies.

Master of Arts degree programme in Choreography
The Master’s degree programme in Choreography is a free programme of two years of full-time studies at the Theatre Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki. The intake is biennial and, in spring 2015, three to five new students will be accepted to the programme.

The programme emphasizes a historically conscious, yet critical, open, and research-based take on choreography. It offers the student a versatile learning environment, which supports artistic development, dialogism and cooperation, integrating practice and theory in studies and artistic processes.

The programme’s language of teaching and degrees is Finnish. The Master’s degree programme in Choreography also accepts international applicants with sufficient proficiency in the English language. Should such applicants be admitted, English will be used in addition to Finnish as the teaching language for the entire class.

Master’s degree programme in Dance
The Master’s degree programme in Dance is a free programme of two years of full-time studies at the Theatre Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki. The intake is biennial and, in spring 2015, ten to fourteen new students will be accepted to the programme.

The core of the studies is versatile research in the practices of a performer in the frameworks of dance art and other similar art forms. They develop the student’s skills as a performer, as an independent and reflective artist and his/her preparedness to function in diverse and variable contexts of dance art.

The programme’s language of teaching and degrees is Finnish. The Master’s degree programme in Dance also accepts international applicants with sufficient proficiency in the English language. Should such applicants be admitted, English will be used in addition to Finnish as the teaching language for the entire class.

MA degree programme in Live Art and Performance Studies (LAPS)
The Live Art and Performance Studies (LAPS) is a free two-year English-language Masters programme in Artistic Research at the intersection of Performance Studies and Performance Art/Live Art practices. The intake is biennial and in spring 2015 we will accept six new students from a variety of fields, cultures and continents.

LAPS is especially appropriate for mature and self-directed artists who already have an established practice and life experiences to explore through performance and theory.

The programme combines critical thinking, writing and practice structured around 1:1 and group mentoring. Our lecturers & mentors research a diversity of fields, including littoral and community-based practices, political and cultural activism, propaganda studies, philosophy, cognition, cultural studies, anthropology, Asian studies, pleasure & pain, gender and queerness, alternative consciousness, visual art, environmental installation, moving image, new media, and performative writing.
